In 1985, when Steve Vai took over as lead guitarist for David Lee Roth’s band, he helped usher in a new golden age for rock guitar — a time defined by excess, energy, and outrageous creativity. Everything had to be bigger: Big hair. Big anthems. Big record sales. And, of course, big, bold guitars!
At the heart of this explosive era were two one-of-a-kind guitars built by Steve’s lifelong friend, the late and legendary Joe Despagni.
The "Swiss Cheese" guitar — instantly recognizable from its wild, hole-filled design, first unleashed in Roth’s “Yankee Rose” video, the lead single from the Eat 'Em and Smile album.
The "Flame" guitar — another head-turner, blazing into the spotlight during the video for “Goin’ Crazy!”, Roth’s second hit from the same record.
Both guitars weren’t just eye candy — they became symbols of a moment when rock was larger than life, and Steve’s playing was electrifying the world.
Now, we’re honoring this incredible time — and the creative genius of Joe Despagni — with an exclusive Steve Vai "Flame & Swiss Cheese" Pillow. Available only at Guitar Nut Tees and personally approved by Steve Vai himself! Available now, shipping worldwide!
Note: Your pillowcase and pillow insert will ship together but arrive unassembled. Don’t worry — putting it together is a breeze!
